- Tigray, the northern
part of Ethiopia, pervades an area of 53,638 sq km. Endowed

Tigray, the major
play ground of ancient civilization of the country, has vibrant rock
paintings that reveal the pre Axumite cultural life. These remains,
mostly located close to the town of Abbi - Addi, Adigrate, Edaga hamus,
Axum and shire display cultivation scene domostic and wild animals and
other artful incisions.
As the birthplace
of Ethiopian civilizations, Tigray houses many treasures of interests to

Christianity has
played a defining role in shaping Ethiopian culture and especially that
of Tigray. Over the years many churches and monasteries where built as
Tigraians commited themselves to Christianity, devotion retained to this
day. Another influence had its roots in the 7th century when the prophet
Mohammed began his mission in Arebia. As his followed were the ruling
Emperor gave them refuge and land. They settled at Negash, North of
Wukro. the majority of common people still hold a tradition of religious
tolerance and this has spread throughout modern Ethiopia.
Fascinating
churches and Monasteries Aot the terrain landscape, the oldest at Debre
Damo, located on the top of an amba or pleteau. Only the adventurous
reach it by climbing a leather rope.
Many are churches
were painstakingly hewn out of rock and some are subterranean. Churches
such as Wukro & Abreha We Asbeha are easily visited more than a dozen
churches Zealously preserve rave paintings and ancient artifacts
including hand written manuscripts. Icons and crosses used by founding
saints can be seen.
Many other parts
of Tigray boasts significant historical monuments that must be seen to
be appreciated. Although Tigray enjoys a rich and colourfull past. It is

There are
hundreds of rock hewn temples & churches in Ethiopia. In Tigray region
alone has more than 120 Wonderfully excavated rock hewn churches. The
rock hewn churches are found in place called Gheralta, Tsada Imba,
Atsebi Wonberta and in many other spots scattered unevenly.
The Tigray rock
hewn churches are more interesting to visit an account of the fact that
one can see antiquity in people, things, places and ceremonies unchanged
for over a thousand years. Also ranked them as the greatest of the
historical cultural heritages of the Ethiopian people.
