Day 1:
Addis Ababa Arrive
Addis Upon evening arrival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, members on
the group flight are greeted with the traditional Ethiopian
hospitality at the airport and transferred to the hotel.
Day 2:
Fly from Addis Ababa to Gondar and drive to Debark (100 km). From
Gondar, we will travel in and off-the-road vehicle passing through
mountainous areas with spectacular panoramas, approaching the national
park of the Simien Mountains. The Semin Massif is one of the greatest
sculptures on the planet: peaks, canyons, gorges, clefts and pointed
amethyst-colored pinnacles like obelisks. Debark is a large village
which serves as a base for excursions into the park; there are some
modest hotels fitted out for tourists and it is there that we dine and
sleep overnight
Day 3: Debark Sankaber
Gich. We will start our travel in an off-the-road vehicle to Sankaber
which takes about 2 hours. During the trip, the altitude increases and
the views are wide and beautiful; the vehicle passes through fields of
barley which extends far beyond once view. From Sankaber we start
trekking: 5/6 hours of walking, first in the midst of the fields, then
through woods of arboreal heather, with giant lobelias and colonies of
gelada baboons everywhere. Overnight stay and dinner in the Gich
campsite, a pleasant field near the village.
Day 4: Gich Chenek. We trek
for 7/8 hours, uphill as far as the summit of Imet Gogo which is 3,926 m
high, a plateau of stone on a sea of mountains and valleys. We further
climb again to the 4,070 metres of Enatye: a long walk on the rim of
precipices. In the steep, rocky slopes below may be seen the Waliya
ibex, an endemic to Ethiopia. We return down to the camp in Chenek,
located close to a stream, where we eat dinner and spend the night.
Nights are beautifully limpid in this region; the sky is crystal clear
and awash with stars.
Day 5: Chenek Arkwasiye: We
walk for 7/8 hours over fields planted with giant lobelias, a sharp
climb to Bwahit (4,437 m). We come back down to Arkwasiye (3,600m);
where there is a large market attended by the peoples of the Simien
Mountains. Dinner and spend the night in an attractive open field with a
view over Ras Dajen
Day 6: Arkuasiye Sona: A
four-hour walk slightly down hill Dinner and overnight in the Sona camp
Day 7: Sona Mekarebiya: We
trek for 7/8 hours, the track rising and falling slightly. For a while
we walk alongside a small river, where it is pleasant to stop a while.
Night is spent camping in Mekerebiya
Day 8: Mekerebiya Amba
Toleka. We climb up again slightly to 2,676 m. The track follows the
Anisia Wonz River, where it is possible to bathe in pleasant pools of
limpid water that is not too cold. In the evening we will host a party
with arrangements made with local people.
Day 9: Amba Toleka Adirkay
Bahir Dar: - An easy 2-hour walk to arrive to the village of Adirkay,
founded by the Italians in 1936. From here, there is a splendid vista of
the entire chain of the Simien Mountains. Overnight at Tana Hotel
Day 10: Drive to the Blue
Nile Falls, which is known as locally Tissat Falls. Upon arrival at the
site we will walk the uphill for about 20-30 minutes to reach the best
view point of the falls which has 45 meters deep and up to 400 meters
wide during the rainy season of June, July, August and September.
Depending on your interest we can descend to the base of the falls and
climb back up the other side and cross the Nile in a papyrus boat which
will take us about an hour.Afternoon, a boat trip will be arranged to
Ethiopia's largest Lake called Tana known for its middle age island
monasteries. Lake Tana is the source of the longest river in Africa, the
Blue Nile and home for 37 islands. We will have the opportunity to visit
the Zege peninsula for its famous 14th century monasteries of Ura
Kidanemihret, Azewa Mariam and the island monastery of Kibran Gebriel
(where only men are allowed) for their wonderful 16th century mural
paintings, crowns, crosses and many old church treasures. A traditional
dinner will be hosted to you accompanied by traditional dancers and
singers. Overnight stay is in the same hotel as the previous evening
Day 11:
Morning transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
Visit Addis Ababa. Early evening, we will take you for a coffee at
Sheraton Hotel and will provide you our gift organic coffee and an
antique Ethiopian Item as our appreciation for touring with us, Four
Winds Travel & Tour. Late at night transfer to the Bole International
Airport and depart for home.
