Denakile (Afar) Depression

One of the Africa's most striking geographical features is a giant tear across the earth's surface visible even from the space; The Great Rift Valley that extends from the middle east to Mozambique which passes in North easterly to south easterly direction right through Ethiopia.

Endowing the country with some spectacular sights range from hot, dry, & barren places to string of beautiful lakes.

Volcanic activity, which greatly contributed to te formation of the Rift valley continues up to present times. In Ethiopia finds the presence of hot springs in many parts of the country as well as volcanic cones in the Denakil depression in the northeast.

The Afar, Denakil, Depression is part of the Ethiopian rift valley. Since the late 1960s it has attracted the attention of researches and archedogists due tot eh uniqueness as the world's only active, suberial triple junction where the complex tectonics and volcanism of an area between three separating litho spheric plates can be observed on dry land.

The land scape of the Denakil looks like carved from the infernos of hell and is reminder of the furies that once ravaged this region with volcanic cones rising above the scabs of black lava.
